Shed Hunter Field Guide: Early Season Scouting

Shed Hunter Field Guide: Early Season Scouting

Shed hunting success starts long before you find your first antler. If you're heading out early this season, here are some smart tips to help you scout efficiently and increase your odds of success.

1. Study Feeding and Bedding Zones
Deer spend most of their time between feeding and bedding areas. Use maps and your own field knowledge to mark high-probability zones before you hike.

2. Look for Fresh Sign
Droppings, tracks, rubs, and scrapes from winter activity can guide you to recent movement areas. Combine this with your scouting map to prioritize zones.

3. Get Off the Trail
Most sheds won't be found on well-worn human trails. Push into thicker cover, near bedding edges and thermal bedding spots.

4. Use a Grid Map System
Use a 20x20 grid map (like the one in the Shed Hunter Starter Pack) to mark your sections and track where you've been. It keeps your scouting focused and helps you avoid repeating ground.

5. Bring the Right Gear
A small pack, gloves, snacks, and your printed map/log sheet go a long way. Bonus: note where sheds were found for patterns that build over time.

Early season is about laying groundwork. With the right prep, your shed hunting days will be more productive, and more fun.
